Académico y crítico alemán. Se desempeñó como tutor académico y escribió para la revista de Friedrich Schiller
Die Horen, de corta vida, antes de fundar junto a su hermano, Friedrich von Schlegel, la revista
Athenäum (1798–1800), que se transformó en el órgano de difusión del
romanticismo alemán. Mientras se desempeñaba como profesor en la Universidad de Jena, hizo traducciones de las obras de
William Shakespeare (1797–1810) que se convirtieron en las ediciones alemanas clásicas del escritor inglés y que se encuentran entre las mejores traducciones literarias al alemán. Su obra
Vorlesungen über dramatische Kunst und Litteratur [Conferencias sobre arte dramático y literatura] (1809–11) fue traducida a varios idiomas y ayudó a difundir los ideales esenciales del romanticismo en toda Europa. Desde 1818 hasta su muerte hizo clases en la Universidad de Bonn.
